The common dolphin feeds on squid and small
shoaling fish like sardines, anchovies, etc. In some parts of the world
they feed at night on the deep scattering layer (horizontal
zone of living organisms, usually shoals of fish, occurring below the
surface in many ocean areas that
moves towards the water's surface at night). Common dolphins have been
seen working together to herd fish, realizing the complex behaviour of
cooperative feeding. Like many other dolphin species, they will
sometimes take advantage of human fishing activities, feeding on fish
escaping from the nets or discarded by the fishermen.
