South American sea lions are one of the largest and sexual dimorphic species in the family of sea lions. They have a very large head with an upturned snout. Both males and females are orange-brown coloured, although females tend to be lighter in colour. Males have a typical ‘mane’ (that’s why they are called sea lion) and a well developed muscular neck.

Adult males have an average length of 2,8m and an average weight of about 300kg. Adult females have an average length of 2m and an average weight of 150kg, about half the weight of the males. Newborn pups are black coloured, about 85cm long and weight between 12 and 15kg.
