Right whales live in temperate and cool seas. During the austral winter,
they migrate to warm breeding grounds (coastal regions) at latitudes between 20°
- 55°S (coasts of South America, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia
and other oceanic islands) where they give birth and mate. During the austral summer, they
will migrate to feeding grounds below latitudes 63°S (Antarctic region).
Consequently, in Argentina they can be found from the Buenos Aires
province down to Tierra del Fuego with the main concentration of
aproximately 5O0 animals in Península Valdés, being one of the most important reproduction
areas of this species.
The world population of southern right whales is estimated at about 7000
individuals.
