This dolphin is distributed only in the southern hemisphere; they can be
found in coastal waters of Chile, Argentina, Peru, Uruguay, Falkland
Islands, Namibia, west coast of South Africa and the east coast of New
Zealand.
The global population of dusky dolphins is unknown but authorities do
not fear for the survival of the species at the moment. An aerial survey
in Patagonia in the mid-1990s indicated that there was a local
population in excess of 7.000 individuals. These dolphins can move over
great distances (780km confirmed). However it is not believed that they
follow a defined migratory pattern.
