There are two populations (both in the southern hemisphere) separated by
130° of longitude, or 8.500km. The larger population is found inshore in
various bays in Patagonia (Argentina), in the Strait of Magellan and
near the Falkland Islands. The second population lives near the
Kerguelen Islands.
They prefer shallow waters and are found in cold inshore waters in open
coasts, sheltered fjords, bays, harbours, river mouths and they
occasionally enter rivers.
En Argentina, Commerson’s dolphins are seen regularly in the estuary of
the Negro river, the mouth of the river Chubut, the port of Comodoro
Rivadavia, Puerto Deseado, Rio Gallegos and San Julian.
Global populations are unknown, but the species is accepted to be
locally common. A survey estimated 3.200 individuals in the Strait of
Magellan.
